Consumer confidence sunk to a 16-year low in May, according to the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index published recently.  Damaged consumer confidence is seen as an indication of poor prospects for spending. Consumer spending accounts for two-thirds of the nation's economic activity.
 
"Weakening business and job conditions coupled with growing pessimism about the short-term future have further depleted consumers' confidence in the overall state of the economy," says Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center. "Consumers' inflation expectations, fueled by increasing prices at the pump, are now at an all-time high and are likely to rise further in the months ahead. As for the short-term outlook, the Expectations Index suggests little likelihood of a turnaround in the immediate months ahead."

In this climate, you need to appeal to your customers’ emotion and impulse by offering a special incentive to motivate them to action.  The core value propositions that were enough to attract customers when overall confidence was high, simply aren’t enough today.
